How was At the Queen's Command?

I enjoyed the book. I'll start with that. It was a decent adventure that took me back to high school. (Wonderful bad guy dialogue: "The fool actually believes. . .") But-- I think PW once described Stackpole's style as "discursive," and that's about right. His characters are forever thinking, and thinking about what they will be thinking down the road depending on what decisions they make now, and reflecting on what they're thinking about what they're feeling, and really it felt like 20-30k words could have been cut from this book and we would still have learned just as much about the characters just by seeing them act. Also, lots of fights of the sort that I used to enjoy but now don't have much patience for, with lots of technical and tactical details that just bog the narrative down when it should be hurtling along. Plus he was back to his old tricks from the days when he couldn't decided whether Ooryl was Qyrgg or Qrygg -- here he can't seem to recall from chapter to chapter whether she's Catherine or Catharine.
