I head canon things based on what is known about how they give birth and how they are drawn.
Turians, Asari, Humans, Drell and Quarians are known live-birthers. So they wouldn't have anything egg laying wise. Batarians and Elcor I lob into that camp considering they take a lot of Mammalian traits (mainly the hair thing.)
Krogan are weird because there is mention of still birth but clutches. Sooo I kind of go with a "has penis and vagiana. Eggs are then laid."
Hanar mate like jellyfish do. Salarians are "release sperm in the egg clutch" and they have cloceas.
NOW FOR MY HEADCANONS FOR EVERYONE!
I did this with my fiance. What we did is we used animals that they take traits off of as well as sexual culture that is known in the games. Or just stuff for fun. But we made sure the parts match. Also, mix-species relationships are...*Mordin breath* problematic

Their hands double as genitalia in males. The ability to detect and interpret DNA / chemical traces left on surfaces evolved to increase reproductive success by identifying the healthiest mate.

Actually, that is a rather hot thought for fic - Javik can share memories with Shepard...so he could re-live sexual experiences and share them with his partner...which could be quite fun. And teasing/hot if you did it in public. Not related to genitalia per se, but hey, this'd be a fun prompt!
I'd like protheans to be like drell with a hemipenis. ...I'm just hung up (heh!) on DP at the moment.

LOL YAY! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Actually applied the one about Turians once but I don't think anyone noticed.
As for Protheans..haven't really thought of that one. Mainly because there's only one in the current galaxy. But seeing as how their culture was rather severe, they probably didn't have sex for pleasure.

Cool beans! Learn something awesome every day. I really only meddle in Biology. My only rebuttle is that the fact that they are Alien, therefore it's possibly they're not going to fully follow Earth's biology. Sooo weak rebuttle at best.
As for the last one: you're right. I don't think people just go head long into this. Well, Garrus kind of does so in canon.

Forgive the misspellings. It was a long day at work and I just went "Fuck it" when it comes to masking my reading disability.
