In the year 2147, a faction of a radical genetic purity movement committed systematic genocide against the turian colonies on the planet Bostra. The Hierarchy didn’t step in to stop the attacks until 40% of the population bearing Mirathax colonial markings had been slaughtered. These regions were targeted because of the high percentage of genetic carriers for the facial plate extension phenotype - this physical characteristic was deemed a mutation and a defect and that purging the gene pool was necessary.
---Saren is too young to understand so part of Desolas is encouraged to lie to his little brother, to tell him any better and more enviable story about justice and fairness and right… but Desolas is not a good liar and Saren possesses a monstrous intellect at age eight. Saren has never been an affectionate child; he’s never been a readily understandable person; there are cold places in the boy that Desolas cannot understand sometimes but in the face of all that they have lost Saren reaches up and grips his elder brother’s wrists and pushes his forehead up against him, holding tight. Certainly a different turn of events than what I had in my head, but I love this so much-and I certainly wasn't expecting such a quick response time! I love the backstory and world building here and it's an awesome little sandbox that I wish it was canon so I could play in it!
The ending makes my heart wrench, too, because with the way Mass Effect: Evolution ends, it makes Desolas' death by the hands of his brother both apt and bittersweet.
Might I return the favor to you in some way, anon? A story or bearing your little mutant babies, perhaps?

I'm.... at a loss. This was amazing and deeply painful and I can't believe I've never come across this before. I've read it through twice now and I still can't put my emotions into anything solid enough to be worth a review for how much the affected me. Fantastic work A!A.
