What is Military Science-Fiction?

io9 has a pretty good article about milSF up on their website. While I don't see Mass Effect listed as an example, I'd say it could be considered part of the sub-genre and some of the points raised could be applied to the ME series as a whole.

Aside from the immediate feelings of nausea and loathing that hit me when I see a Karen Traviss book, that's a good read. It's a shame Mass Effect isn't mentioned, because it takes advantage of its medium to tackle the problem of "Technology and Details vs. Story," since there's ten times more world-building than a novel could rightly get away with via the codex.

Probably the biggest let-down of ME2 for me is that it drifted away from milSF, both in storyline (which I care about less, because I'm not so willing to judge based on my own personal preferences in lieu of its own merits) and in presentation (which I judge away at; the lack of proper space suits with helmets on everyone that often gets brought up here is a good example. Dammit, the uniformity of equipment on the SR-1 wasn't a bad thing.)
