Also, I don't think you can really see the train number from inside, so I'm not sure how all those people do see it (unless it's pasted on the nose of the train and I'm just not seeing it). It's more likely the crew recognition that Mel's talking about.

I'm like that at South Station - usually know which one's mine about five minutes before they announce it, and can head straight out.
It's usually the same train (literally- just pay attention to the car numbers) or people recognize the conductors. Usually the same group of conductors does a line run for about a 4-6 month stretch. Sometimes longer. There's one guy on my train home who recognizes me and occasionally asks me how married life is treating me... only because he noticed me really jittery on my last day of work before taking off for the wedding last September.
You'll become one of them. :)

The 5:40 train I take to Providence in the afternoon comes from Framingham. If I take the 6:10, it's coming in from Middleboro.
It's why the "Worcester Line" trains with Wi-Fi are also available on other lines... they do go to Worcester at some point during the day, but also go elsewhere.
