I am reading some books that give some good advice on continually upping the ante so the middle doesn't sag. Not big on writing how-to books since they are usually Avoidance Mechanisms, but Wired for Story: The Writer's Guide to Using Brain Science to Hook Readers from the Very First Sentence by Lisa Cron is actually one of the more useful ones I've read.
