It's probably the beginning of the end when you blog about not blogging. I guess the reality is that most of my LJ buddies have already gone past this into the realm of not blogging. Nothing to new say, I wonder? Or is the real world providing the engagement and discussion that perhaps used to be delivered through the virtual pipes and tubes? There ( Read more... )

Short except:
Viewed from this perspective, there is only one widely-used social network (at least in the U.S.) that has strong privacy, one that stands out from all the rest: LiveJournal ( ... )

FWIW If our main on-line interaction had been on FB, you'd still be in my generic RPG buddy crowd, not a friend... It's been your LJ posts that have made me want to run games that impress you :-) The seal of Mash approval is quite an achievement and I wouldn't get the same sense of worth from you posting "So cold in Alaska" FTW on FB :-)

Also have hugely appreciated your recent comments on my posts! I like people who logic my problems!

It's interesting to me, but not only do I agree about FB comments, but evn FB notes don't have the same influence to me. In fact, I usually skim them at most. Mentally, FB fits somewhere between Twitter and LJ, and much closer to the former, even if it has some of the functionality of the latter.

As far as my circle of friends is concerned, I haven't found that LJ has declined in population since the big hit it took when Facebook arrived in NZ in, what, 2008?

Yeah, there was a distinct knock to the system then, but my sense is that recently quite a few of my particular friends have stopped posting recently. Really only two or three people are active on my friends page right now.

And as alluded to, I think this extends a bit beyond even LJ. Dale's gone quiet, Steve Hix has gone quiet, Andrew Miller has been quiet...

Maybe the situation is that the Wellington RPG community is quiet rather than LJ generally - it's hard for me to make that call since that's my default online set. Luke is the only formerly regular poster still plugging away - at his solo adventure books.

If it was the Wellington RPG community on a lull, that would explain why I haven't noticed it. You and Luke are my main LJ windows on that group.

You young uns wouldn't understand the appeal of solo gamebooks. ;)

I recently found that I return to LJ after having used facebook almost exclusively for a while (in which I was very busy). Facebook is the right place to say "look, I'm still alive", but if I wanna know anything that might be of any importance I look at the LJ posts people wrote.

I still like coming by to check lj, and as you say, the fact that less people use it (ie not my fam + extended fam + ex-workmates+ antenatal group etc) is quite appealing. It is also the fact that less people use it that makes facebook the go to option.

For me reduced blogging is mainly lack of time. I partly blame facebook for that too. So many people means it takes a fair chunk of online time to keep up with it. le sigh.

I completely agree. Also I find it harder at the moment to put together my scattered thoughts into something coherent.
