I was going through my Pocket account and found a few old fics that I'd bookmarked. I read them instead of studying and found that I really miss seeing Mike and Tom in SPNRPF! I also find it strange how characterization for RPF characters seems more all over the map than it used to be. I would've thought the opposite, because with so many cons, and ( Read more... )

Interesting! I love love love 'first time' fics- for me there's just something amazing about that moment of realization !

It's not that I don't like it, it's more like I don't feel a need to look for them/label them as such. IDK why.

Oops, I left off half my comment. I meant to say that since I love them so much, they're the first thing I actively seek out in a fandom!

That's interesting to me that you're the opposite. :)

When I first read SPNRPF, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed Mike and Tom's presence, because I don't really have an interest in the actors. I watched the first season or two of Smallville, adored Lex Luthor, but got bored with the show quickly. So ultimately, I've never seen them at conventions and I don't make an effort to look up their personal appearances. So with SPNRPF, they're like fictional characters to me and I don't nitpick their portrayal as much. I've even written Tom into one of my stories because he looked/felt fitting for one of the roles. I don't think it's thoughtless characterization - I just don't know them like J2 and don't care to, so I don't feel a need to be true to the actors, just true to my story ( ... )

I actually meant that Tom and Mike were pretty consistently characterized, compared to many of the common RPF characters now. Which I find surprising since SPN has so many more actors to choose from for RPF, so most SPN fans should be somewhat familiar with them. But the characterization for the newer RPF characters seems to be all over the map.

I enjoy deathfic myself, because of the powerful emotional response it provokes. I love angst, and the emotional journey in the aftermath. With SPN though, I do like if they somehow magically come back with happy endings for all...but I appreciate the tearjerker now and then too :)
I think you've hit the nail on the head perfectly. There's just so much emotion with death!fics. Although I can't say that I recall a death!fic with a happy ending that has stuck with me.

Oh I see. I don't think I read enough RPF to notice characterization variances...or maybe it's because I'm picky and the RPF stories I read tend to use almost the same old school group of characters.

Now you've made it my mission to find a death fic with a happy ending! It just occurred to me though that maybe I'm using the wrong words. By happy ending, I mean the dead person either gets resurrected or wasn't really dead at all...so happy reunions! But is that still a death fic then? lol.

I will read almost anything when it comes to J2 RPF. But I find that with some of the more total AUs, eg. a/b/o, dragons, creature!fic, basically stories that aren't set in any world remotely similar to ours, I have to turn off my brain somewhat and not read it as an RPF story, but more as an original story.

I think it still counts, if it's not cracky and the theme of death is explored.

YES! There are so few RPF stories in which I recognize the people I love from con vids and interviews and so forth...

Is it Mike, Tom, Jason, Steve, the RPF characters, or are those just the names of OCs that the author happened to pick?

Heh, yeah... there was this (amazing) Suits fic, which I don't even like, but the fic was amazing, in which there was an OC called Matt, who was also this sweet, caring, not uptight about his masculinity guy, and to me he's Matt Cohen, no doubt about it. At all.

Aww that's awesome! I do like Matt Cohen. He seems like such a sweet guy.

he really does. I like a guy who feels comfortable walking around in a skirt and being supportive of LGBT(AQ?) rights.
Misha fits that description to, and perhaps Osric, come to think of it <3
It's nuts that SPN has these guys and I'm so into Jensen...
but he is Jesen.

OMG I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Osric! And he is always a Vancouverite, which is a bonus in my book XD

As for Jensen... yeah, I think he has a lot of issues :/
