I am sure you will find what you are looking for in life, whether in Italy or Japan, and I am sure your girlfriend will be fine in whichever country you two end up in.

I like your mom's advice about burning bridges behind you. It is similar to the legend of Cortez (a Spanish conquistador whose army defeated the Aztec in Mexico) which states he burned, or in some other way destroyed, the ships in which he and his men sailed to Mexico in order make it clear to the soldiers there was no going back and that marching ahead and succeeding was the only option.
