Title: Though It's Not Love [on ao3] Pairing: Mary/Raph - but read those Mary/Marshall undertones in just as strongly as you like Rating: R Summary: Though it's not love, it means something - inspired (somehow) by Depeche Mode's World Full of Nothing
(She cleverly ignored the fact that it was Marshall who suggested exactly what to get for Jinx, Marshall who wrapped the present, and Marshall who, she found out weeks later, had told Raph when Jinx's birthday was in the first place.)
I think I like this whole "Mary/Raph" (it needs quotes, it does, sarcasm quotes) subgenre you and snerky have going here. And I like her calling him Chico in her head. Two thumbs up!
I have an urge to make some kind of sarcastic "Chico is so totally awesome" icon now.
(hosnap check it I'm an icon thief! Speaking of, GO FOR IT. I appreciate sarcasm.)
lol "Mary/Raph" subgenre. It's true, but I never really thought about it! hi5 to Snerky for starting it, then! As to Chico... yeah. I call him that, so why shouldn't Mary? Many thanks, and glad you liked it!
Well, not dump him, because that's what you do with boyfriends, but stop having all these one nights with him. Then he had to go and get hurt, and fuck if she didn't just watch him turn into a bird with a broken wing, just like her mother and her sister and the occasional actual bird dumb enough to try to fly through her not-that-clean windows. She stuffed him on the couch, because her two spare rooms were full and the kitchen table was just for birds, and when she didn't want to deal with him, she got her sister to do it.
I like the way this story rattles out in Mary's stream-of-consciousness kind of mode, like her voice-overs. I especially like the way you put a spotlight on the fact that Raph's injury flipped that little switch inside Mary that says, "Take care of people you're responsible for because your daddy didn't" --- that's a perfect reason as to WHY she took him back in after she'd (essentially) told him to feck off and take that tacky gold ring with him.
Most importantly, she was at no risk of falling in love with

That's my own personal canon on the subject. She just needs some help working out who she's responsible for... though I guess it also extends to "people who have nobody else": her witnesses, her fucked-to-hell family, and this poor little immigrant who has nobody in the world (except all his friends) other than Mary.
He's convenient and he fills a void. That's all. He's the boy toy.*hi5* Exactly how I feel (though, y'know, I still don't like him),

And doesn't that just sum it up, right there? :)
Very good portrayal of Mary's reasons for keeping Raph around, especially with the Mary/Marshall undertones. :)
