Thanks, Anne! Actually, I also added less liquid when using the canned beans; the dried ones seemed to take up more. Broth or water is one of the many things in this recipe you ca be flexible about, which I guess would be true of any folk recipe, I now want to figure out Skel's favourite fruit bread, Niki's seed cakes, and a soup plus a couple of teas. Also mulled ale. That should be enough to be going on with!
