I wouldn't call Blue State a typical romcom, I actually thought the writer/director was trying to make one of those quirky Indie road movies. It's still boring as hell though and I couldn't care less about anyone in it, I actually would have preferred a typical romcom.
It felt very typical to me. Boy meets Girl + Boy and Girl "bond" a short while after they meet + Usual jealousy card gets thrown on the table + Bang! It's LOVE + Random cliché political lines sprinkled here and there. The only indie thing about that film must have been the budget ;)
Regarding: a) It *tried* to be, but failed miserably; b) Yes, hate turned into love definitely is *one* of the can formulas, but there are others. Like falling in love under thin substance. Meaning, they start indifferent to each other and after a couple of "soul-spilling" moments love is achieved.
Yeah, it definitely has its tedious parts. I guess it also has something to do with how long the film runs. I mean, it's really *really* long. And I echo the shout to b&w love. Just beautiful :)
