Problem with the BSSFA list serve

Jun 07, 2009 14:56

So it seems there is a problem with the list serve and the bullshit that is our shiny new email accounts. The listserve doesn't recognize our new email addresses as being on the list serve. I have found a way for each of us to update our emails so that we don't have to make Cat's life miserable next semester when she takes over as secretary. Also ( Read more... )

ISR isn't telepathic. They won't notice these things unless someone complains. So, call them up and make sure they know what's happening! Besides, Tim just lost his best students to graduation, and I have no clue who's working for him this summer.

fair enough, I'll send them an email about it, but I honestly don't know if they can fix it any easier than we can. the best they might be able to do is send an email out to everyone and tell them they need to do it.

Yes, they can fix it easier than you can. They can run a script server side, and knock every stu off of stu.beloit.edu.

Heh. If there were anyone working summer who wanted to take the time to write any sort of script, that is a true thing. Based on who is actually working over the summer... I'm pretty sure Tim would have to write the script himself.

Just to clarify: the problem here is not that the list serve won't send e-mails out to you, but that it won't recognize you as a pre-approved member of the list and thus requires all e-mails sent from the new stu accounts to be verified by the mod. It's not a problem with the new system, but rather an inevitable complication when you change e-mail addresses. In the next year you're going to have to change your stu address anywhere else you used it as well, because ISR is going to stop forwarding you emails sent to stu. eventually.

It's possible that someone working in ISR over the summer will take the time to run a script on all of the list-serve memberships to strip "stu." from any addresses that contain it, but based on the staffing that I remember being discussed, I wouldn't count on it. Definitely send Tim an e-mail about the problem and he can send an e-mail out to everyone detailing what they need to do to change it on their own.

I sent him an email, but yea I'm expecting to have to take care of this ourselves.

I finally got an email back from him, he says that we should just reregister everyone so it looks like we're going to have to do this the long way.

It's only long if you make one person do the entire thing. I'm all for getting everyone who uses their stu account to make the change themselves. I'm still trying to convince Tim to send out a campus-wide e-mail, to save the list admins that trouble. Especially since most of these admins probably switch over the summer and no one is in charge at the moment.

But yeah, no surprise that ISR isn't going to handle it internally.

*note* To log in to the above site you need your listserve password which was routinely sent out to you in a monthly email. If you don't have this please contact me
