And what rough beast, its hour come round at last

New York City had one of the highest mutant populations in the country, largely due to District X and the diverse, melting-pot nature of the city. All across the city there were roving death squads of Purifiers, rioters and lynch-mobs from associated anti-mutant groups like Purity, and Sentinels and Prime Sentinels attempting to hunt down mutants ( Read more... )

Captain America stands before an abandoned building on the coastline. Inside are countless mutants, all with powers quite useless in combat -- the ability to change the color of a flower might be kinda cool at times, but it's not all that helpful when Purifiers attack with flamethrowers. So they have gathered here, in one location, believing there to be safety in numbers. But it merely means they are gathered in one easy location.

There's one man standing between the Purifiers and the building of their targets. Behind the would-be killers, a Sentinel is approaching.

But Captain America will fight to his last breath to protect these innocents.

If anyone dies here today, it will not be one of the mutants.

Peregrine swoops down, picking up a small bright-yellow-skinned child from the descending fist of a Sentinel.

"This is why I don't like America to have nice things," he calls to Shamrock.

Shamrock was right behind him, two other kids in tow, "The ruddy gits wouldn't know intelligence if it hit 'em in the back of heads."

You left children out of wars. Especially ones you fought out of hatred. Shamrock was very firm about this. "They need to keep their damn noses outta our business."

Omega doesn't give a word of warning. These men are trying to kill civilians.

He unleashes blast after blast of energy from his hands towards them.

These chumps are even trying to mess with the Hellhouse.

Deadpool stands at the doorway, cocking Mr. Smiley.

"TO ME, MY X-MEN!"

"Batter up!" Fenway barks, striking a cool pose next to Deadpool with his bat and baseball-painted grenades.

"Are you the best there is at what you do and what you do isn't very nice?"

Fenway looks at Wade curiously.

"Top of the batting order?"

The Thunderbolts are highly visible in this crisis as well.

Mach IV has been using some proprietary technology to try and confound the Prime Sentinel attack wave...

... while Atlas and the others resort to a more direct approach, sweeping them up with a giant hand and pitching them into the Hudson - if that water doesn't muck them up, nothing will.

Songbird soars above, trying to pick off flying robot-men as best she can - which is pretty damn good.

Moonstone, however, doesn't bother much with precision. Purifiers, Sentinels - it doesn't matter much who she hits. Her blasts work in wide swaths to try and stem the tide while she hovers above the fray.
