Welcome to "The Mog"

Nov 30, 2008 01:14

They call this place "Little Mogadishu,", more commonly called The Mog. It's the worst neighborhood in Brooklyn, if not the entire US. Twenty-two square blocks of poverty stricken hell, divided up and controlled by local gangs.

Cops rarely enter here. Capes, good or bad, never enter here either. No colorful criminals, just your mundane human ( Read more... )

Kate had new weapons to test out. But this wasn't about taking names and kicking ass with shiny new equipment. Mostly, anyway. This was about doing her job. And sometimes this job got ugly, but you didn't flinch from the details.

Not if you wanted to be good about it.

She was out of sight as far as people on the ground went, and she had her target in her sights. At least, a good way to get her target in her sights out of the house.

An arrow was aimed at one of four tires, and fired. You could hear the hiss of air and the subsequent, overpowering noise of the car alarm from where she was.

And now, for her next trick, there went tire number two.

Guys, rich or poor, young or old, black, white, Latino or Asian... they hated it when you messed with their cars.

His now had two arrows in the tires.

The car alarm went off like a klaxon. The Rainman was out of the house, assault rifle in hand, in less than a minute. Some of his boys, just as heavily armed, followed.

"Oh hell no... Oh Hells no!"

He looked around, trying to figure out where them damn arrows came from.

Why was it always high powered assault riffles? Kate didn't care much for that. At least some of these new arrows had interesting and useful heads on them. Like the one she knocked now and aimed right for the car door.

This one was a sonic arrow, she had made the mistake of testing it at school after hours and had been almost deaf for two days and using cotton to plug up her bloody left ear. Sometimes it still started to ring.

This one was shot right in between the group of them. Not only would it leave a nice dent in the door, but it would hit them pretty hard. Even the ones that killed their eardrums with music so loud you could hear it five miles away. (She hoped on that last.)

"Oh, hells yes," she returned as she fired. "Hope you boys brought ear plugs," she muttered. She had. If this went well the next round of arrows would be knocking guns out of writhing drug peddling assholes.

"Got-damn!" He didn't know who fired that arrow, but he was gonna kill the shit out that bitch. Rainman couldn't hear himself think, or barely see straight, but he at least had a general idea which direction the arrow was fired from. He fired back wildly, his bullets shattering glass as they flew into apartments across the street.

He didn't give damn right now. You scratch his ride, you die.

He eyed her.

"Minister Josiah al-hajj Saddiq. 'Josiah X' to most of the people around here. I'm... a friend of Faith and Isiah Bradley. We met briefly at their house last... Christmas, I believe."

Kate remembered then and her face lit up with recognition. She didn't think they had even said more than two words to each other at that gathering, which was why she knew the face but didn't recall the name until he gave it.

"Funny, I thought Eli said you were his Uncle," she returned. His eyes weren't anything like Eli's, well, they were in tone, but not in softness.

The boy runs his mouth too much.

"An informal title. As I've said, I'm a friend of the family." At least, as far as she was concerned, that's all he was.

"No, he was pretty sure that you are his uncle," Kate returned simply. And for a reason she couldn't really put a name to it was...insulting that he tried to distance himself from them. The Bradleys were good people, as far as Kate was concerned.

"I don't know why you'd want to separate yourself from them, but it is your choice, so... if that's how you want it to be...."
