Pumpkin Games

"Peter Peter, pumpkin eater," Percy Grimes intones. He looks out on the field before them, illuminated only by the tiny sliver of a crescent moon, as he tosses a single pumpkin seed from his bag to the ground. Immediately, the ground begins to rumble as a pumpkin vine begins to grow ( Read more... )

As the birds vanish from around him, Hollow finds himself in a large room with walls made of pale orange, though the ground of freshly-turned earth fills the room with a unique odor. Moss-covered, weather-worn tombstones fill the room in uneven rows.

Before he can react, a white sheet falls from the ceiling towards Hollow, twisting towards him as if to wrap him up within itself.

The Brothers Grimm, watching the events of the room through a magic mirror, begin to sing, and the song begins to echo throughout the room.

"Did you ever think, as a hearse goes by... that you might be the next to die? They wrap you up in a big white sheet and and bury you down about six feet deep..."

The sheet continues to move towards him, to wrap and entangle him...

...and a coffin thrusts itself from the earth, opening, and attempting to leap at Danny to trap him within.

"They put you in a big black box, and cover you up with dirt and rocks, and all goes well, for about a week, and then the coffin begins to leak!"

Felicia hissed and slashed but it was to no avail.

Really? Birds?

Birds attacking a cat?

Wasn't this going the wrong way?

Wasn't she supposed to, like, chase after them.

And of course, her unlucky powers decide not to come into action right now.

Hisssssss.

Birds.

Birds were Sophie's thing. And if this was any indication of what the feathered menaces were really like, Mindee was more than glad to let her sister have them.

The bond she shared with her sisters confirmed one thing, she was the only one who had been taken like this. Other than that though? She got next to nothing, other than a sense of panic off her sisters. It was almost like being alone. And it terrified her. This was what she got for wanting a breath of fresh air before slipping into her Halloween costume.

Take me back! Let me go! Mindee shrieked without words. For all the good it did her.

She didn't want to be here at all. Much less hardly able to hear her sisters.

When the birds clear from her vision, she finds herself tied to a rope... with another figure tied behind her. Below them, a cauldron of green fluid bubbles and steams.

Three witches stand nearby, cackling.

Mindee's eyes widened. This was bad. She wasn't TK or anything like that. She was a telepath, and, she thought, the least powerful out of all her sisters.

Too startled to speak out loud Mindee's panic was projected psychically and silently. She got the presence of mind to try to psi-blast the witches and hope she didn't accidentally fry the person with her.

Sophie was always so much better at this crap.

LET US GO!

But there is no mind there to strike at. The witches are not alive.

The rope begins to lower.

There were very few holidays Shamrock went 'home' for. Oidhche Shamhna, Hallowe'en in English, was one of them.

After all, it was a feast for the dead. It drew her back home in more ways than one. Bonfires were lit in small towns, feasts laid out be it in a pub or in home and in the town she hailed from, the farmers were deciding which cows to slaughter and which to save.

When Shamrock was over taken by birds she was about to toss a peeled apple over her shoulder out of an almost morbid curiosity to see if anything would show up on it.

And then the bloody birds came out of nowhere.

"Bloody pigeons!" For once all the channeling and struggling in the world didn't change her luck.

As the birds vanish, she finds herself strapped to a table in a room with walls of pale orange.

Above her, a rusty blade swings on a pendulum, back and forth... back and forth....

"Well fancy that," Shamrock said looking up, "I never even liked Poe. Here I thought those ruddy pigeons were supposed to tell me how long I had to live..."

Not take her right to the end.

Well, not the end.

This was Samhain, All Souls, today she was at her strongest. Or supposed to be. Shamrock started working on the straps. It wasn't easy. But she didn't expect it to be. Hands free first.

And then the rest of it would follow.

It was another normal day in Attilan. Woz knew nothing of Halloween and nor did he care. Human holidays didn't matter- except for Valentine's Day. That was a holiday worth keeping.

As luck would have it he was nowhere near a reflecive surface when the birds came swooping down like something out of a horror film, which Dewoz also knew nothing about.

"What in-" Woz didn't wear shirts so the birds had to grab hold of him by his skin. He grunted from the pain and tried to strike the birds that by all accounts should not be on the moon but to no avail.

When the birds vanish from around him, he finds himself strapped to a table in a room that looks like it came from Frankenstein's laboratory.

A hunchback looks down at him with a drooling grin.

"Maaaster," it groans. "The subject is here."

"Excellent," a straight-backed man responds, turning towards the table with a bloodied bone-saw. "Is the brain ready for transplant?"

"Yes, master!"

Woz glanced at the saw. Too dull and bloody to move into. But the eyes...

He stared and sent his body forward to move inside the man's mind. Only he couldn't.

"What have you done to me?!" He demanded.

They ignore him. The doctor approaches, his grin hidden by a surgical mask spattered with blood.

"Now to remove the brain from the subject," the doctor explains to his assistant, clutching his wickedly-barbed bone saw. "Stand by, Fritz!"

"Yes, master!" Fritz lurches towards the table with a glass bowl in his hands. Within the bowl, a brain floats in a greenish liquid.
