The Day From Hell - Mayhem in Bellingham

Aug 10, 2008 20:23

Bellingham, Washington. A small city, considered liberal in atmosphere, nicknamed the "City of Subdued Excitement." It was so subdued, in fact, that they didn't even have their city nickname written down anywhere. It was ironically located right near a small town called Lynden, which had a public climate that was almost the exact opposite ( Read more... )

Calvin arrives within minutes of the Blackbird. He's quite able to get himself there - though at the sight of the town, he's almost sick. His own world was past most conflicts like this as of years and years ago. He's used to the X-Men being greeted as heroes... and no matter how much he's heard, seeing the reality here, how bad things have gotten, sickens him ( ... )

The cause is in them. In their minds.

An unnatural yearning. A burning.

But a burning for something very specific.

It consumes their minds and their souls. They can think of nothing else. They can see nothing else.

That which they want, they can smell it in the air. They can feel it in their bone. They're being drawn to it. Led to it.

And when they find it?

They will destroy it.

Calvin hates having to do this. But he sees no other choice. Focusing all his will, he reaches out, feeling the hate, letting himself delve into all those minds - and one by one, he tries to shut their minds down. They'll live, in any case, and he has no idea how many he can handle. Its no worse than one of Betsy's knives... though he has no idea how that might affect someone in this state. But it should put them down with as little harm as he can manage.

The attack starts to have some effect... but suddenly, there's resistance. A lot of resistance.

They're fighting it...

City Hall was all but deserted. Shortly after this first started, the mayor ordered everyone to evacuate to emergency shelters.

He, however, stayed behind.

Cyclops headed in cautiously.

The Hall itself had seen minimal damage, but that alone raised his curiosity. How could this place, which was poorly defended, remain relatively unscathed in the midst of such chaos?

Wolverine followed, checking the area surrounding the Hall for anything that might give them some clue. It was distracting enough that the air was tainted by the smell of fire and flesh and madness.

There wasn't much in the way of clues. The place was eerily quiet.

The entire first floor had been abandoned. But upstairs, the lights were on in some of the offices.
