At The Bugle

Phil looked around in confusion amidst the bustle of the office. Dropping his uncle's name, at his reccomendation, had gotten him up to the editorial offices, but now what? No-one could seem to point him towards Uncle Ben, or anyone he recognized from his internship at the Bugle before. Granted, it had been quite a while since then, but it was a ( Read more... )

"Well, well, well," a voice calls. "If it isn't Phil Urich."

Glory Grant is smiling at him, leaning against the wall across the way.

Phil raised his head to the voice addressing him, and willed the gears in his mind to grind a little faster until he came up with a name to go with the face. "Miss Grant? Yeah... that's me. The shortest-lived Urich this paper ever saw." He grinned lopsidedly.

"No one outlasts your uncle, kid," she grins. "And call me Glory. What brings you back? Taking in the ambiance?"

Gloria is one of the few people who actually remembers almost everyone who worked at the Bugle since she was hired... since most all of them need to see Jonah at some point.

Phil smiled back playfully. "You'll outlast anyone. Try walking out and Jameson would grab onto the bumper of your cab. After all, behind every great man there's a woman rolling her eyes." He chuckled and then cleared his throat.

"Actually, I'm dropping off some ads, and I'm supposed to be interviewed by someone. I'm starting up a special outreach program, out of the Baxter Building."

Joy Mercado stared at the words next to the blinking cursor on her computer screen.

"Excelsior: A Latin word meaning higher, superior, lordly."

Huh.

She lifted a perfectly manicured hand to run through her perfectly styled blonde locks and stopped herself.

Interview with Phil Urich. Musn't mess up hair. Right.

Instead, she jotted down a few quick notes and a few quick questions and checked her watch.

He should be here soon.

Joy sat back and waited for Phil, patiently sipping her coffee.

Having found a note directing him to Joy Mercado on his uncle's desk, and several unsuccesful attempts to flag down someone to give up her location, Phil hesitantly approached who he hoped was the right reporter.

"Miss Mercado? I'm Phil Urich. My uncle said you were going to interview me." He extended his hand. Woah... she's hot.

... Down boy, you've already crashed and burned with two female journalists before.

But she is hot.

Joy looked up to see a semi-cute young man staring down at her. She set her coffee cup (which proclaimed her to be a Numero Uno Reporter) aside and looked up at him, a smile starting to tug at the corners of her full, glossy lips.

"Phil, it's nice to see you," she said pleasantly, standing up and offering him her hand. A few gold bangles jingled merrily on her wrist as her eyes flashed with the fiery inquisitiveness of a reporter who's written about a good many superheroes.

Phil shook her hand, smiling politely. "The pleasure's mine Miss Mercado. I really appreciate the Bugle and one of it's leading reporters giving up their time to help support this project."

He seated himself and took out another copy of the flier he'd just submitted, summarizing the group's mission statement. "We're starting small, but eventually, I hope for there to be an Excelsior center in every major city."
