Avengers Assemble!

The meeting has been a while in coming. They've been making their opinions known to each other in small groups and fights but nothing official has been declared. They all went on detente for the holidays with only minor skirmishes. They all wanted to be a family for the holiday after everything that's happened this year. But now there's no ( Read more... )

The Scarlet Witch sweeps in, looking scarcely the worse for wear after her recent shopping expedition.

Wonder Man takes a place next to Scarlet Witch. He hates meetings. He has this feeling he's REALLY going to hate this one.

She's not far behind Wanda and quietly takes a seat, though she's only quiet because she's trying to figure out how to turn the sound off of the gigapet.

She smirks at Jan and the gigapet but takes her own seat. She's got a lot on her mind and one of them is finding Jan's husband when this is over for a talk.

Sam's next to fall in, and nods to the others in the room before taking a seat.

Upon hearing the summons, the Vision phases through three levels, descending from his quarters on the second floor down into the main assembly room in the first sub-basement. Restoring his density to a normal level, he moves toward one of the chairs surrounding the large conference table, his cloak fluttering behind him.

The fact that Tony feels like he has to be here in full on armor says volumes for how this is going to go.

"We're here Cap, just go ahead and get started." He should know there's going to be no way to do this gracefully or with everyone being happy.

"So what is our official position on the whole thing?"

Captain America straightens up at the head of the table.

"I know this is a weighty issue for all of us, and I know there have been some tensions flaring about this, and I'm sorry for that."

His eyes meet every pair that meet his own as he speaks.

"But our official position has to be cooperation and agreement with this new law. The stakes are just too high."

"Cooperation is one thing, but agreement?" The Scarlet Witch frowns. "I'm not sure I can speak out in favor of the law, even officially. I have too many reservations about its effect."

"We must be clear here. I know there are people claiming this is just a modified version of the Mutant Registration Act, but this is definitely not the case. It discourages untrained, underaged children from risking their lives, and frankly, I'm a little disturbed that we're not all on the same side with this."

Hank is pinching the bridge of his nose.

"Jesus Christ, this is not the Hitler Youth. Let's not be stupidly hysterical here with the accusations..."

Clearly offended at the implication. He's unaware that his own wife played the Nazi card in an earlier argument.

"By the post office, I just meant that the training facilities would probably be widespread and benign - perhaps a more apt analogy would be metahuman welfare - giving help to desperate people who need the practice and discipline to control the abilities they have. It's like the YMCA - we're not preaching abstinence."

Wanda cannot help but stare at the file for Thomas. This one who blew up a school and has an arrest record.

And who is now living hand to mouth.

"Vision and I know the pain of losing children who are ... more than you think they are," she says quietly. "I understand the grief and not wanting to see others die. But I know that you cannot save children merely by fencing them about with laws. Even sheep may trample down a fence, and children are not sheep."

She's been dead quiet this entire time - to the point of almost not being visible - up until now.

She raises her hand meekly. Someone has to say something about Iron Man's great and wonderful files, and she might as well be it. "I started doing what I'm doing now when I was 14. I have something to say about this idea of 'recruitment.'"

Wanda had her mouth open to answer Hank and Sam, but she turns to Rachel. "Please, do speak."

"Crossbones killed my brothers, which in turn killed Momma and threw me out on the street needing to make a living and wanting never to be that helpless again." the memories aren't good ones, but what doesn't kill you does indeed make you stronger.

"The Tinkerer knew I was underage and liked the idea." There's a slight pause as she lets that sink in. "Taskmaster doesn't check IDs for his academy. I have to ask here: If we have this law, aren't we asking those kids in Iron Man's files just to head off to the Hellfire Club, the Circus of Crime, or Taskmaster, HYDRA or a dozen other places I can name if they have no other place to go?"

She's a living, breathing example of what happens when talent, ambition, and pain meet up with no place to go but down.

This was another point that was on her mind. Hank's position on this has kept her quiet. It's already caused some strife between them, amongst other things, so for once, she's being very careful about what she says and when.

"Outlaw guns and then only the outlaws will have them."
