Okay, so it was a very good night last night. I now feel satisfied that America doesn't fuck up everything it touches and that maybe, just maybe we have a chance of getting this stuff right now ( Read more... )

Can you explain to me how Obama received more votes in Utah, and yet McCain was declared the winner? I thought I pretty much understood how the voting system works, but that one just baffled me.

Whoa, seriously? That doesn't make sense, and if it's true... uh, that's really not how it's supposed to work! XD

According to an elections website that I expect would be reliable, McCain actually did get more votes in Utah. It looks like it was 555,497 for McCain, 301,771 for Obama, and 26,390 for third party candidates. Another credible elections website seems to bear that out.

Where did you hear that Obama got more votes in Utah than McCain? It seems unlikely to me, but if it's true, then I have to wonder what happened that it was reported in Australia but not in this country. Maybe we really have gone to the dogs after all...

XD I didn't think so!

It was an American site. They called it the 'Dashboard' which had a map of the country up, and every five minutes it was updated with the current talleys around the country. Very fancy Flash stuff. They must have had a mix up there, because it definitely said Obama ended up with the most votes, and all of us at my work were going "But...but isn't that where all the Mormons are?? They'd be voting Republican!"

Your thought was right, in my opinion. Mormons are mostly Republicans, and typically very conservative. They usually vote for Republicans, a few notable counterexamples notwithstanding.

I think something was up with that site. It could be that the webpage was reporting the election returns from Salt Lake City first. Salt Lake City is the only really big city in Utah; most of the 10% of the state population who are Catholics live there, and it's not coincidentally the most inclined to vote Democratic. Only one out of Utah's three representatives is a Democrat, and he comes from the district that includes Salt Lake.
