He had lived a long life, he had seen so much suffering through that long, long life of his, that sometimes out of what he perceived as pure selfishness, he wished nothing more than to see some true joy. Not for himself, as he believed there was little room in his spark for joy anymore, the weight of millions and millions of stellar cycles in battles had taken a toll on him. He was wary, tired, but he still drew pleasure from the joy of other beings.

Take Elita 1 and her friends, Sentinel and Optimus. There used to be so much joy to be shared by those three. Although he had always felt Sentinel could use a little adjustment to his ever growing ego and attitude, he saw the perfect balance for him on his friends, and he brought out the best of them, even in unorthodox ways. But when Elita was lost, the joy he felt in his spark just by laying optics on the young recruits, evaporated into nothingness. Optimus dropped out, and although Sentinel kept climbing positions among the Elite Guard, his attitude kept getting worse and worse.

He tried to find little rays of joy from other sources, try to look at new recruits that'd make him feel alive. Sometimes he felt like a leech, feeding off the happiness of others, but he truly could not find it otherwise. Relationships came so scarcely in his life and his spark was so dull, so worn out and tired, that he could not find any joy in someone else's company, he failed to make a deeper connection with his potential partners, and thus, relationships, whether romantic or more intimate felt like a chore more than the fulfilling experiences they should be.

Then, he met Jazz, and he knew from the moment he laid optics on the young recruit that he'd get along very well. Jazz had an easy personality, everyone liked him, he was popular, a very open minded individual --sometimes a little too open minded for Sentinel's taste; and very caring. Ultra Magnus felt refreshed by his presence and found on Jazz a new source of that joy he craved, and he was glad the cyber ninja was also skilled enough to work his way clean and honest up the rank ladder.

Ultra Magnus enjoyed his company, both in the professional sense and in a more casual way. He found in Jazz someone he could come close to consider a true friend in his mostly lonely life. But as more time he spent either watching Jazz or in his company, he also found Jazz himself was incomplete. He had an easy, kind smile, and Ultra Magnus liked it, but he also knew that smile was lacking something he couldn't quite put a finger on. It was also worth of notice that Jazz did not smile often either, his expression was almost always set in a somewhat solemn expression, almost as if hinting Jazz was also craving something he had yet to find. It brought great sadness to the Elite Guard's commander to know Jazz was missing something and hoped the young mech would find it one day, both in a selfish desire to see him happy so his happiness would bring Ultra Magnus joy, and because he honestly wished happiness and fulfillment for him.

The trip to the organic planet known as Earth became a very revealing experience. He felt more alive than he had in deca-cycles in the presence of this crew of mechs that had gone from space bridge repair mechs to heroes and protectors of the local life forms. They had opened themselves to experiences the old Autobot prejudices would have made impossible to experience had they not been stranded in the new planet.

He found an Optimus Prime who had grown up from a wash out to a responsible leader, learning from his mistakes, growing as individual, and bringing out the best of his crew.

But a more interesting development came from one of his own mechs. Jazz, always so open to new things, found this world to be of his liking, bringing out that almost sparkling-like curiosity, an unusual and rather lovely naivety to an otherwise resourceful, well prepared and capable cyber ninja. But what was most important, Jazz had found someone who brought out that easy and likeable smile of his much more often, and made it brighter, more honest, more real.

THe visor of the other mech also shone brighter, little smiles curved on his almost always pouty lips. He wasn't sure what kind of relationship was brewing between them both, it could be a strong friendship that'd transcend descriptions and definitions, or something more involved, just as deep, and strong, and beautiful. Whatever it was, Ultra Magnus wished with all his spark for this development to carry on, for Jazz to be truly happy, for Prowl to experience that completion he received from Jazz and gave in return. For their joy to brighten up not only their lives but those around them.

He knew eventually they might have to part, even if his intention was to bring the Autobots stranded on Earth back to Cybertron, he knew there was always the possibility he would have to let them stay. Although that would bring great sadness to Jazz, and by extension to Prowl, Ultra Magnus bowed to himself he'd arrange for either one to be brought to the other sooner or later.

Even though soon there would be sadness, he made himself the promise there would soon after be joy.
