Ooooo, fun meme! Wow, sorry to be predictable, but I'm surprised you haven't read 1984 and Brave New World. They kind of go together, in that way that all Future Dystopias do. But pleasurably so. Oryx and Crake also fall into that category, but you aren't missing anything vital by not reading it, whereas I feel that 1984/BNW are required reading.

Many of those are good books (Time Traveler's Wife, Memoirs of a Geisha, Strange & Norrell) that are well written and enjoyable, yet not everyone's ideal cup of tea. But I recommend them anyway.

But I totally hear you on Joyce. The Dubliners is the only work of his that I was able to get through without throwing the book against the wall. Ugh. And WHY is Wicked on that list? The play is supposed to be better, but I thought the book sucked.

Really? I've heard "eh" things about Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (like it's good, but it's not good enough given how long it is) whereas my dad LOVES Wicked. Which was unexpected -- but there it was, on the back of the toilet when I was home at Christmas. This has been your My Dad Story moment of the evening. Happy birthday!

In other news, I am also embarrassed that I haven't read A People's History of the United States. But I've read Lies My Teacher Told Me! And Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria! And I took City Politics!

Crap, I need to get cracking.
That copy of "Prayer for the City" on my bookcase isn't going to read itself!

Is WAAtBKSTitC worth reading? I feel like everyone has read it.

Do I get extra geek cred for having read 1984 while at Governor's School?

Extra points to you. Do I get extra points for reading Dune in 8th grade (Mr. Hickerson) because I forgot my book on the day that we had to bring in our book report book to approve -- and he just happened to have a copy on his shelf?

I saw the BBC miniseries of Neverwhere -- I just never figured the book would be significantly better. Am I wrong? I did enjoy American Gods, though I can't say it is the best! thing! ever! (Because my best! thing! ever! title has already gone to Cloud Atlas.)

I've never actually seen the miniseries, so I can't really compare the two. I did enjoy the book though.

And, if you haven't read it already, Good Omens is the Gaiman book to read. (Despite not being on the above list.)
