Martha clung to the console of the TARDIS as the ship spun through the Vortex, secretly glad she hadn't had much to eat earlier. Of course, they'd been on a planet where the tea they'd been offered had been a strange yellow colour, and the sandwiches had contained purple slugs - all a bit off-putting, really. As much as she liked adventuring, ( Read more... )

The Doctor was pretty busy beating the console into submission with a small, rubber mallet when he felt a frisson of... something not quite right run up his spine and settle in the back of his mind. It was so strong, combined with Martha's sudden question, he stopped what he was doing for a moment and listened with every part of himself, hyperaware in a way he hadn't been in... well, not since he awoke in the dark, alone ( ... )

Martha wondered if she ought to get the Doctor to put a seatbelt on the jump seat; that might be easier than clinging on for dear life every time they tried to go somewhere, anyway (as the bruises on her body attested to). Still, the ride was exhilarating, especially when the Doctor grinned at her like that. Like his successor, he had a grin tht was infectious and incredibly endearing all at once. Truth be told, she'd half fallen in love with it.

"Well," she pointed out, a little cheekily, "a lot of things in the universe aren't human. In fact, probably most things aren't, though it probably depends on which time period you're talking about." After all, humans had survived to the very end of the universe - and beyond. They were survivors - but they were a bit like cockroaches, too. And, like cockroaches, they didn't half tend to breed and take over.

The Doctor had to chuckle. "Thank you for the lesson, Doctor Jones," he teased as he negotiated them out of the Vortex and into... somewhere he'd never been. Instead of the dread he might have felt only a few weeks before, he felt the thrill of waiting adventure tugging at his senses.

He came around behind Martha, tapping the hand resting on what Martha guessed was the handbrake. "Lift that up, would you?" He'd had every intention of making a play for a kiss, but the TARDIS had other ideas, and she spun wildly.

"Hold on!" he cried, throwing himself back into action as he scrambled to restabilize her. "We're going in a bit hard, so - " the rest was broken off as the sound of a loud crash filled the room. As soon as it was over, silence prevailed and the lights flickered out. The console room was lit by the backup power, and it cast the room in a dim blue glow. "All right, Martha?" he called, applying himself to stopping a small fire off to one side.

"Do you ever land upright?" Martha grumbled from where she was in a disgruntled heap on the grating. She'd tried to pull the handbrake, but hadn't quite made it - and then she'd lost her grip and been hurtled across the console room. (She was really starting to think the TARDIS didn't like her.) Still, it was good-natured grumbling, as she didn't mind that much, really. She pushed herself upright, brushing a stray wisp of hair out of her face, and dusted her jeans off.

"We're having almost as many adventures inside the TARDIS as we are outside," she commented wryly, climbing to her feet and fetching the fire extinguisher tucked away under the jump seat. "And more injuries, I think." Martha pulled the trigger on the fire extinguisher and aimed - and ended up spraying foam all over the Doctor. Well, she hadn't quite meant to do that - but on the bright side, the fire was out.
