Timeturners- canon/fanon

I've got to thinking about timeturners, and there is a whole enormous HERD of plot-bunnies with a timeturner central to the plot scampering through my head. I'm not even kidding.  Then I got to wondering if they could be used in canon. JKR made time a big deal in The Prisoner of Azkaban, so I don't think it will be a big issue in the 7th book, but
