The more I think about it, knowing young people, the fitting-in-at-school factor could be a big deal. Especially for girls.

Without meaning to in any way deny the probability of whitewashing, I must say that your other theory - Twilightization - strikes me as being a very likely culprit too, at least if those latter two covers are anything to go by.

I think it's very possible both were factors, because I can imagine the cover still being Twilightized (ha, that's a good word) without losing the Chinese-ness of the protagonist and setting. The way it was done though, the costuming is generic (not to mention inaccurate), and the dagger in the second cover is more Celtic than Chinese.
