Thank you for the summary. The new guard's sheer fail is something the press didn't pick up on, so it's amusing to read about it here.
It's amazing, given the cut-rate performance by Dr. Thio since she revealed her part in this fiasco, to consider that she has a PhD and was dean of the Law Faculty. If someone with her brainpower (or lack thereof) can accomplish that, why am I not running a country somewhere?
But frankly speaking, I felt that it would have been better if the pro-old guards exhibit a bit more restrain. And allow the former new exco a chance to speak their pieces, no matter how untrue, or how wayang. It is common courtesy, no matter how much one despise them.
But anyway, IMO, Josie has done admirably well. Although I disagree with her ideals and methods, but I do think she had conducted herself well at the EOGM. In a sense, I don't think she is a bad person at all. Just misguided.
But i really WTF at the 90k. Did you hear the estimated cost for their legal counsel. I don't noe if I read wrongly. I think someone asked how much their legal counsel would cost, roughly.
They said 80k!!
Then a lawyer stood up and ask why they didn't ask the old guard for help, he is the legal counsel for the old guard, and would have done it pro bono for the EOGM.
There were some points where I did think some hecklers were going too far, but sometimes the exco were making such unbelievable statements, they were bound to attract (and they received) many negative responses. Honestly even when I wanted to be polite, they said too many things that made me want to go "WTF?" ;) In a way it was not surprising that the exco got the responses that they received. Poor things!
Oh yes! I heard it was $80k - $90k for the legal counsel. So the headline today that the new exco had spent $90k so far was surprising because I thought it was LOW. I think the real numbers are going to be higher!
The moment Sally Ang said "Shut up and sit down" - I knew that they weren't going to listen. And the "feminist mentor" - doesn't earn my respect at all. She came across as extremely false and self-serving ("Look at MMEEEEE!").
I hope that the new committee led by the old guard keep their eyes open and ears alert. The rightwingers are not going to give up - their tactics are sneaky and many times, underhanded.
I'm optimistic after this event. I think more people's eyes (not just AWARE's old guard) have been opened to right-wing/fundamentalist tactics and motives now in Singapore. And religious folks of all stripes (hopefully) should be doing some self-reflection if they weren't before. (Well, one can hope.)
