Well, it's that word "unreasonable" that sticks in my craw. Some cracker thinks this is reasonable. I think it is unreasonable, but who asked me? I could go get myself arrested by refusing to be searched and refusing to leave the subway, but THEY decided to start it on a Friday so whoever gets arrested as a protest has to rot in jail over the weekend.

De facto martial law. The question is, can it be sustained if martial law has not been declared in the city? If martail law is declared, then they can search to their hearts' delight. The criteria for martial law, though, is pretty interesting: gotta have a war. Check! gotta have a declared war. Uncheck! gotta have a government that abdicates its powers to the military. Uncheck! gotta have unrest or the threat of unrest. Maybe.

It's the Maybe that gets all the attention. For that "Maybe" we get the Patriot Act which aloows alll sorts of "martial law" actions. It is a suspension of normal peace time rights in light of our ambiguous conflict with terrorism. Hmm.

I wasn't aware of martial law, or, for that matter, a war being fought on our soil. The searches, as far as I know, are being done by the police, not the military. Still. I'm getting tired of sacrificing my rights to protect against things that happened four years ago.

O, Canada...
