I am one hundred percent with you on the fixies. I find them annoying. The lack of extra cables is nice, but in general, I like my gears.
Marlo, I'd like you to please direct me to linking to what kind of the rain pants you have. I totally asked my friendslist for raingear options a couple of days ago and you're basically the only person who would actually HAVE raingear. Aside from friends in Portland. But I need it. Daily commuter, you know! And apparently, it rains in Santa Monica.

I don't think there is a Mountain Equipment Co-op in California, but perhaps you could order the pants online. They are here, but if you're willing to spend the extra money, these are even better. I will probably buy them later on.
I would try any outdoor store there is where you live. I'm not sure what stores you guys have down there. Happy shopping!
