And don't you love it when characters take on lives of their own, and refuse to do what you want them to do?

Yes. I actually had to rewrite three different scenes because the characters argued that they wouldn't act that way (one for Brock and two for Misty). Of course, they were right.

It's funny. The dinner scene which introduced them was originally only there because I needed something for Ash and Misty to do that particular evening and simply having them eat dinner together wouldn't have worked for where the story was at that point. Misty had mentioned in an earlier scene that she met some people, and that bloomed into the dinner scene, which changed the entire rest of the story, or at least how it happened.
