I've had little to do with the oil tanks in our homes. The only thing I tried to stay on top of was making sure the tank didn't dip below, like, half-way when we had the kids- just in case there was a storm or something. Our recent company did any maintenance and they were good about always topping us off- since they had contracts with, like, the whole neighborhood, it made sense for them just to service us all at once. We switched over to gas about a year ago.

If you've never had forced hot air before, you may want to look into either a system-wide humidifier, which you can install in your basement, or purchasing humidifiers for the bedrooms. We actually have both - Ainsley seems particularly sensitive to the dry air, even though we have a system-wide humidifier (and yes, I think there is a filter in that that must be changed), so we got her a cold vaporizer for her room. Talk to gregmarr on AIM if you have more questions.

Can't help you with the oil heat questions; we have natural gas.

you get services once a year, usually with the contract that you signed. if you go look at your furnace they probably have the date of the last service (they also test to make sure its running efficiently, so they leave a tag on my furnace for that with the date)

Most oil companies offer service contracts. That should cover a once a year clean/safety check for free. They will change filters at that time. You might be able to get a cheaper contract the first year.

With the contract, you will have someone to call if your heating system fails.
