Bannister Effect The ground came up to meet my heels in a lover’s rough encouragement, propelling me along at a speed I never achieved before. I’ve been running my entire life; if the women in the songs can achieve the impossible feat of escaping an impending fate, then so could I. If a nymph can sing and dance without chastisement, then so can I; ( Read more... )

Good to see a metamorphosis and an escape for your thoughtful heroine. She saves her own life, doesn't she? I really liked how you took her through several hopes and wishes before her dive.

She really truly does, which is all we can do in the end, isn't it? My feet felt like her feet, and I know from experience that the mind plays all kind of wishful delusions when desperate before it lands on the right one to pursue and make a reality.

You've reversed the Little Mermaid! Now see, if Disney decided to do THIS with their live action version of the film, it would actually be worth it!

This comment pleases me to no end, even though that was not what I intended! I was thinking more of all those clever nymphs, but I am with you. I'd love to see a movie of someone getting back to the ocean rather than out of it.

My favorite part of this was your use of the word "bleating." It so thoroughly painted a revolting picture of that character that I absolutely could not wait for her to break free.

Mine too! From that, you could tell that it wasn't just the loss of freedom that so drove the main character crazy, but also the specific person with whom she was now stuck, eternally stuck.

Until finally even death was more welcome than that fate.

I hope she survived, but even if not, she has not been able to escape otherwise and certainly doesn't want the only life left available to her.

I suspect she did, but that might be because of my fantastic imagination and hopelessly tender heart

I am so glad it succinctly drove the point home! I didn't want to waste too much time on that character because this isn' t his story.
