That has happened to me many times. It's an awful feeling; to hear what you've been thinking, dreaming, mulling over perhaps for years, letting it ripen to something great, only to suddenly hear it done as a simple pop song, pitch-shift-performed by some airhead and silicone-breasted bimbo, written by a ghost writer and presented in the complexity of a children's song. No matter that your work will be grander, greater. Everyone will recognize it as "derivative" of the now popular tripe, so you have to scrap it.

How to live with that? It's a good question. I usually scrap everything I have not yet released that could be considered "derivative" by the public, or I rewrite it and have friends listen to it and ask them if it reminds them of something. This part of music is no longer art. That is pure craft.
