Skype is fairly inexpensive for international calls, and if the airline has a toll-free number in the US, it’s free! I made use of this to change flights when I was in Jordan. Call quality could suffer if your connexion is overloaded, but I was at a hostel, probably won’t be a problem for you.

Booking a holiday is something you I can do last-second: I bought the tickets for the excursion I’m on a week before leaving, and I won’t be back home until October!
