Ha. Well, I expect they own your soul for this project. That's OK for your first few projects. You do what you need to do to get what will serve as your "demo" produced. Brian Michael Bendis wouldn't be hauling in the dough and working on so many projects he loves if he hadn't worked essentially for free for years to get his name out there.
By the way, I really did like the comic. And the art is really great, 50s stylized. Reminds me a bit of Sandman Mystery Theater and Guy Davis's work on that comic, which I loved.
And yeah, their contracts are pretty mercenary. They pay you decent money for the work, and you hold the creator's rights-- but they own the copyright and media rights. In other words, they can do whatever they want so long as they keep your name on it and pay you minor licensing fees.
It's not GREAT, but it isn't a total screwjob either-- but I'm looking at it pretty much as you say-- it's a good foot in the door or a way to get some publicity. If I had ONE big idea, it wouldn't be wise to do, but we cooked up these ideas just for Zuda knowing we might get them taken away. In other words-- I'm not giving them my Star Wars,, I'm giving them my Howard The Duck!

Though if you read the Zuda contracts you'd probably start slapping my silly.
