Re: present tense (I've been trying to reply you on that, but I'm expecting guests and am frantically cleaning the house). In English, present tense conveys a sense of immediacy that seemed more appropriate to that particular moment in time that did past tense. Since Roshea and his comrades are going to be faced with a turn of events they didn't expect, the present tense just worked in that case.
