The process of creating this poem incorporated more elements than is typical for me. It was primarily driven by an exercise from my workshop. We were given the task of keeping a journal of what we saw and thought while spending a few minutes looking out a window. The assignment was to write a poem about looking out a window.
Since I've been trying to write more poems with a scientific or science fictional bent, it occurred to me to place the window somewhere other than on Earth. Originally, I had it on one of Jupiter's moons, but after reading a very early and rough draft to a friend, based on her feedback I moved it to a much more accessible location.

I was in the process of reading The Science Fiction Poetry Handbook so I incorporated some ideas from that.
The "frosty photo negatives" is from a terrestrial observation many years ago, which I had jotted down in my poetry fragments file.
The rest is my usual process of writing.
