bullet point update

Apr 30, 2009 11:44

I've had so much going on! I feel the need to update (probably because I have a lot of work to do) so I will do it in bullet points.

Stuff that's been on my mind:
  • The Swine Flu - Sometimes I wish I'd never read Stephen King's The Stand. Because I'm traveling this weekend, I am a little paranoid about catching it. A bunch of us are traveling to ( Read more... )

I couldn't put The Historian down! It actually made me want to read Dracula and I'm really not much into horror.

Twilight is pretty bad. I'm also not sure about the message it sends to more impressionable readers regarding relationships, but at least now I can make fun of it with the experience of having read it! :-)

I generally assume that books targeting a very specific audience (as Twilight targets early teenage girls) will be bad. Good fiction almost always appeals to a wide variety of people. The Harry Potter books were so successful because, although they were written to be accessible to older children, they were good enough to be enjoyed by everyone.

Have fun in Denver! I haven't seen you in awhile, so if you avoid catching the swine flu, we should hang out when you get back. ;-)

Probably a good rule to go by. I always got so frustrated when my friends would not even read the first HP book to see if they liked it, which is why I eventually read Twilight. It's kind of weird that so many teenage girls love it though. Do they all want obsessive relationships?

We should definitely hang out soon! I've been really busy since getting back from Holland, which is why I haven't been around much. I'll be visiting my mom for her birthday/Mother's day next weekend, but after that I'll be free for a bit.

Is your mother's birthday near mother's day? My mother's birthday is May 11, so sometimes they coincide.

Yup, May 10! It's kind of fun when it falls on Mother's Day!

My supervisor (no, not the good British one) once fell asleep in one of my papers...

haha! One of my committee members fell asleep during my preliminary exam, and when he woke up, asked me a question that had already been asked. :-)

Have fun at your conference! It's nice that you can relax for most of it instead of stressing about your presentation.

Connecticut is a nice state. I have a very good friend that lives there and it's quite lovely where she is.

So you're the imaginary friend of a two-year-old? That explains a lot! *g* He sounds adorable! I love that age.

2 is definitely a fun age. It was really fun to be his imaginary friend! I need to ask my sister-in-law if he's still talking to "me". :-)

The writing is terrible. It is not because you listened instead of read.
