I must say I'm a little surprised at the books on this list...It seems like they should be among the most read, or maybe I'm ( Read more... )

What was Middlesex like, that you couldn't finish it? I've never made the attempt. But you finished Moby Dick which I completely failed at...

Well, I tried to read it back in high school I think, or maybe early college, and if I recall correctly, I was a little grossed out by the incest, but I may have on top of that also just gotten bored with it. I'm sure it has many literary qualities. :-)

Moby Dick was read in my English class so I had to finish it. I never would have gotten through it on my own, but we had discussions about each chapter which made it lots more interesting.

High school was the only reason I read some of the Dickens. Like David Copperfield -- I wouldn't have finished that on my own. But I'm glad I did.

Some others I wouldn't have read without high school, but aren't on the list: Silas Marner, Jude the Obscure, The Agony and the Ecstasy (I picked that for a book report, and boy was I sorry!)

Agreed! Especially with Jude the Obscure. Some of those for me were Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Billy Budd. I loved that English class though...I had an awesome teacher!
