For the way ONTD posted about it over the summer (bc of Fox promoting it) I was thinking this was going to come out of the gate in a big way but it did suck-to-middling ratings. And most of the comments/reviews I've seen haven't been much more positive than, "It was funny."
I'm pretty sure next week's episode ratings are going to sink but knowing Fox they'll air the whole season out of spite.
That. Like, I know it's the "thing" to be cheeky and overload things with jokes to prove how NON racists and homophobic it is but like, when the whole fucking show is ONLY those jokes? IT'S NOT CHEEKY AND "FUN" ANYMORE. It's just stupid.
I wanted to like it as it's the sort of show I usually enjoy, but everything was played with such a lack of realism that I couldn't get attached to any of it. It had some funny moments, but it all felt so shallow to me. They lost me with the way that everyone reacted to the maid getting her face burned off in boiling oil lol, Heathers had plenty of black humour too, but at least it had Winoda Ryder's character to ground things and act genuinally horrified in the death scenes
YES, the realism aspect! I tried to put my finger on why things didn't click so well with me beyond the complete lack of humour or anything relevant (still bewildered by how dated and stale the whole thing felt) and yeah, it had absolutely no grounding. The Chanels were bitchy like the Heathers but they were fucking plastic.
Scream the series is one I was worried about before I started watching but was pleasantly surprised by how it turned out. It's not going to win any legit awards, the mystery was pretty easy to figure out and, of course, some of the characters did dumb stuff, but overall it was funny, well-paced and there were consequences for the characters. As pop-culture based as it was, it wasn't too smart for itself and it KNEW what it was and used that to its advantage.
Watching SQ felt like when you speed up the tracking on a show so everyone sounds like hyperactive chipmunks. It sounds funny but grates quickly and totally takes away from any connection to the actual stories/characters.
