I booked my time off for
winchestercon! Whee! Sure it's not for another 11 months, what of it?
Going to reply to the love meme comments, but not tonight. It's almost 11 and I'm watching the rest of Fringe (which is breaking my heart this ep, it is) and then I'm going to bed.
Title: A Woman Waits for Me
Pairing: Sam/Ruby, Sam/Kristi
Rating: PG-13
Words: 747, unbeta'd
Summary: It took Ruby a couple weeks to get back to where Sam was.
A/N: I wrote this before 409 "I Know What You Did Last Summer" so this got Kripke'd. I was okay with the way it came out, and it was one of those random, stream-of-consciousness things, for the most part. Now if only I could apply that to the fics I owe people.
She waited.
It took Ruby a couple weeks to get back to where Sam was. Lilith sent her far, damn near across the country. It took her days to figure out where she was, to come back to her senses, so to speak.
It was so much easier to formulate thoughts as a demon while in a body, oddly enough. In her demon form everything was very one-sided, one aim. Crush, kill, maim, destroy. It was an odd feeling, odder to even have that difference when finally inhabiting a new body.
She waited.
Ruby wasn't sure what sort of body she wanted this time. She missed her old one. The host didn't struggle too much and it was comfy; homey, even. And she had bitchin' hair.
She made her way across the country by jumping from body to body, like a hitch hiker. She knew it wasn't the most convenient way to get back to Sam but she also knew that it would be a better way to find someone who wouldn't fight her, who would, perhaps, even welcome the intrusion.
Humans were weird that way.
When she finally found Sam it was in Illinois. He was laying low, moving carefully and watching his back.
She waited.
Sam didn't do much in the short time that Ruby observed him. She kept her distance and changed bodies often to avoid arousing any suspicion at all. He went out at night, sometimes to bars or restaurants, sometimes out with weapons to hunt and tackle small jobs. He didn't move on or take anything too big that he didn't think he couldn't handle on his own. Without Dean Sam was turning into a dreadfully dull boy.
Just when Ruby thought she should finally step up and make herself known Sam changed up his pattern.
He brought someone back to his motel room.
She wasn't anything special, from what Ruby could see. She had long dark hair, and a sweet enough smile. Beyond that Ruby didn't see anything that would draw his eye.
She waited.
Outside his room that night, listening to them. It was a little creepy, sure, but she was a demon. She had levels of creepiness and this was the least of her worries.
She waited until the girl left the next morning, murmuring a thanks to Sam while she stepped out the door and he closed it behind her. Kristi, he called her. Sweet name for a sweet girl, it seemed.
She waited outside Kristi's apartment. Pontiac was a tiny town so Ruby couldn't hang around without looking conspicuous but Ruby had time.
She followed her to work, to the gym, to afternoon visits with her grandmother at the manor. She went everywhere, waiting for the right moment.
It came on a random Tuesday night when Kristi left her apartment around ten and headed for the bar on the outskirts of town, the one where she met Sam originally. Ruby followed, whistling quietly under her breath.
Kristi was early. She took a table at the back of the bar, ordered a beer and waited. Within a half hour Sam joined her, sitting down without saying hello to her. Kristi didn't see to mind.
Ruby was done waiting.
She watched the body language between Sam and Kristi. Sam was hesitant, he likely didn't ask for this reunion. Kristi obviously saw something more between them. Poor Kristi.
Finally, Ruby got her moment. She ditched her current body in the men's washroom, then slipped into the women's.
Kristi didn't struggle. That surprised Ruby a bit. If she took the time to look deeper she thought she would probably find that Kristi welcomed her, welcomed the change. Maybe she already knew what was coming. Ruby didn't care.
It was always a disorienting experience being in a new body but Kristi's felt a bit more comfortable, maybe because of the extra effort Ruby put into getting to know her every move. Either way, she was ready.
"Sam," she greeted once she returned to the table. She played it casual, keeping a neutral expression on her face as she turned to Sam.
He studied her carefully for a few seconds before leaning back in his chair.
"It's about time."
"I wasn't gone that long, was I?" Ruby laughed.
"Wasn't talking about that. Hello Ruby."
Ruby felt a slight shock go through her, but it was one of familiarity. She let a slow smile creep across Kristi's mouth.
"Didn't mean to keep you waiting."
