Помандер (от французского "pomme d'ambre" - душистое яблоко) - специальный сосуд для амбры, мускуса, парфюмерных масел и смол.
Первой абсолютно правильно ответила

Но правильно ответила и еще написала про уксус -
только lyalique.

Чаще всего помандер- это резной металлический шар, в форме яблока или апельсина, как бы разделенного на дольки, каждая из которых содержала душистое вещество, позволяющий запаху выходить наружу через ажурные решетки или отверстия.
В Европу они пришли с востока еще в 13 веке.

Приятные запахи несли не только парфюмерную, но, как тогда считалось- обеззараживающую функцию.
Вплоть до 20-го века люди верили в то, что некоторые приятные запахи оберегают от болезней, передающихся по воздуху.
Вслед за помандерами, которые были особенно популярны в 16-18 веках, ту же функцию выполняли позже портбукеты или флаконы для духов.
Помандеры носили и на себе,на шейной цепочке или поясе, их подвешивали в каретах и комнатах. Делали их из золота и серебра, украшали драгоценными камнями и эмалями.

Pomander, from French pomme dambre, i.e. apple of amber, is a ball made of perfumes, such as ambergris (whence the name), musk, or civet. Pomanders originated in the East and were first recorded in Europe in the 13th century. They were worn during the Black Death and other outbreaks of the plague as a protective jewel.
Some pomanders were made of open metalwork. Others, like this one, were made of a series of closed, separate compartments. The pomander's six compartments fall away from the centre on hinges. Sliding covers open to reveal their aromatic contents

Like pomanders, vinaigrettes could be used as a vessel to hold strong smelling substances to be sniffed should the user be passing through a particularly smelly area. At a time when miasma theories of disease - the idea that disease was carried by foul air - were dominant, carrying a vinaigrette was considered a protective measure.

Pomander, from French pomme dambre, i.e. apple of amber, is a ball made of perfumes, such as ambergris (whence the name), musk, or civet. The pomander was worn or carried as a protection against infection in times of pestilence or merely as a useful article to modify bad smells. The globular cases which contained the pomanders were hung from a neck-chain or attached to the girdle, and were usually perforated and made of gold or silver. Sometimes they contained several partitions, in each of which was placed a different perfume.
A pomander is a case for holding aromatic spices, herbs or substances from the animal world. People believed that having these substances close to the body would ward off evil, illness or even death.
Pomanders originated in the East and were first recorded in Europe in the 13th century. They were worn during the Black Death and other outbreaks of the plague as a protective jewel.
Some pomanders were made of open metalwork. Others, like this one, were made of a series of closed, separate compartments. The pomander's six compartments fall away from the centre on hinges. Sliding covers open to reveal their aromatic contents
