По легенде, Зевс явился Европе, игравшей с подругами на берегу моря, в виде белого быка и похитил её, увезя на своей спине на остров Крит. На острове Крит Зевс принял вид прекрасного юноши и овладел Европой. От этого союза родились Минос, Радаманф и Сарпедон.

Впоследствии Европа вышла замуж за Астериона, царя Крита, который, умирая бездетным, оставил власть над островом сыновьям Европы от Зевса.

Геродот считает Европу дочерью финикийского царя, которую похитили из Тира критские купцы.

composition of this relief derives from ancient Roman gems. It shows the Greek god Zeus, who turned himself into a beautiful white bull so as to abduct Europa and carry her off to Crete. In this frank representation, the bull turns to lick Europas breast.
