Пожалуй, самый древний- это
паланкин - портшез, palanquin, sedan chair, litter, kago - носилки, кресла или кузов, обычно на двух жердях. Cредство передвижения в виде укрепленного на длинных шестах крытого кресла или ложа, переносимого носильщиками.
Такой покрытый подвижный стул использовался как элитная форма транспорта в течение многих столетий, особенно в культурах, где женщины были изолированы от общества. Особо роскошные экземпляры, огромные и богато украшенные- в восточных культурах.

Они широко использовались вплоть до середины 19 века, а в горных местностях и дальше, при необходимости некоторые модели можно было ставить на колеса и запрягать мулами или лошадьми.
В них совершали как короткие прогулки и визиты, так и длительные путешествия, носильщиков было от двух до энного количества- в зависимости от величины портшеза.
В литературе в описаниях быта западноевропейского города XVIII в. этот вид городского транспорта именуется портшезом, в англоязычных странах- sedan chair.

Open sedan chairs were carried by two men and served to transport high-ranking personages (especially women) within the palaces. This gold-plated, lavishly carved sedan chair is equipped with arm-rests and a fold-out footrest. It is decorated with red, gold-embroidered velvet and lined with golden trimmings. The back-rest shows the coat-of arms of the House of Hapsburg-Lothringen resting on the double eagle and with the imperial crown above it.

This gala sedan chair is particularly luxurious because it is glazed all around and the exterior is covered with red velvet and golden trimmings (in 1842 velvet, trimmings and tassels were renewed using 18th century materials). The gala sedan chair was last mostly used on the occasion of christening ceremonies at the Viennese Court.

This festive two-seater travel litter is upholstered in red leather and decorated with more than 11,000 gold-plated nails. Four beams for the pair of mules are attached with screws. The interior is decorated with red silk-vlevet and golden trimmings. In the back seat there is a built-in toilet.
This gala litter was mainly used to transport the archducal coronet between the monastery of Klosterneuburg and St. Stephen's cathedral in Vienna for the ceremony of hereditary homage to the heir.

The green-painted two-seater litter from the Vienna court shown here was used on longer journeys and is accordingly comfortably equipped. For the night it could be arranged so that it was possible to lie down and in the back seat there is a built-in toilet.
Until the middle of the 19th century litters were popular as safe vehicles, particularly for mountainous routes. They were carried by two horses or mules harnessed between the long carrying shafts.

The surprise is an automaton wind-up figure of Catherine the Great. The sedan chair itself was carried by two Africans that could also be wound and would walk carrying the chair. Unfortunately the surprise has been lost
