My latest Tor.com post, chatting about Gregory Maguire's Wicked, is up at Tor.com.

In related news, apparently my new title is Tor dot goddess of all things Oz. I like it.

To answer the question already instant messaged my way, I have not seen the musical because every time Wicked came my way I was either broke or busy or both ( Read more... )

Dear G'Ozdess,

Thanks for that article. It was great fun to read. I just got to review "Wicked" the musical for Centerstage Chicago (I'd both seen and read it before, but not for some time), so it's been in my thoughts lately.

I remember that I liked the book too, but found it cold, and retain the feeling that the whole thing unraveled in a great rush in the last third. I've been meaning to revisit it and see if that impression still holds up.

I saw that, although I carefully avoided reading the actual review. I'm heading to see Wicked in early March with a couple of friends, who aren't big Oz fans but thought this sounded interesting, and I wanted to stay as spoiler free as possible.

"Unraveled..." Yeah, you're right. I wish I'd thought of that word! Where were you when I was writing this article? Anyway, yeah...I really did get involved in all of the university and Emerald City stuff, and then, thud. I thought things improved at the end, though, but I'm beginning to see that's not a universal impression.

I'm starting the next two books next week, so we'll see how that goes.

I couldn't get through her growing up even... I just didn't like the book. I'm going to see the musical, though, in late March (or early April -- not sure which weekend he got)

S, C and I are going in early March when it comes through here. (Assuming the tickets actually arrive from Ticketmaster, mind you.)

That is the greatest title ever... And well deserved!

I KNOW! I love it. I want to put it on business cards. I'm trying to figure out if I can sneak it into introductory conversations without sounding overly pretentious and snobby!

I've seen Wicked four times now, with a fifth one coming up in April.

Love love love the musical. Not so much the book. Such is life.
