Doctor Who, and, the worst superhero idea ever, bar none

From around the internet: the opening sequences of Doctor Who:

What we learn from this, I think, is that Matt Smith is young. Very young. I mean, ok, we already knew that, but this just emphasizes the point. He's young.

Also, I am still all nostalgic for Christopher Eccleston.

Thank you!! I thought I was the only one... Whenever I mention him, people are all "oooo David Tennant!!" but I <3 Eccleston as the Doctor.

Eccleston was fantastic! I think if he had stayed longer, people would be just as nostalgic for him as they are for Tennant.

I love both Eccleston and Tennant. Sadly, I am not getting into Matt Smith at all and I really wish I could. He seems flat to me. Yeah, he's spazy but he just seems boring and certainly not crazy mad. I'm not sure what they are thinking with getting increasingly young actors to play the Doctor. Mr. Smith is just too young IMHO. I do however like the companion this time. There are so few older actor roles out there and the show really could use one. I wish it would go back to the older actor as the Doctor. Now that we are done with the first season of Smith, I can't think of any scene that sticks in my mind where he grabbed me. I can think of a few Amy Pond scenes though. Rumors are that Smith is leaving after season two (early) and we will see.

One of the reasons I prefer Eccleston to Tennant is that although I loved Martha, I hated, but hated, Donna, to the point where it colors my perception of Tennant. Not entirely fair to him, especially since I like his interactions with Martha and Rose.

I've only seen a couple of episodes with Matt Smith so far, so I'm reserving judgement, but so far, I like Amy Pond and am kinda eh on Matt Smith.

Matt Smith wouldn't be so bad, except for two key factors.

He's ugly. Like "Nightbreed" Ugly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mdcktta2BZk (strong language alert--Matt Smith's first role! He's the guy with the knife, I think.)

He chews scenery like he hasn't eaten in weeks.

His companion is the only reason to watch the show, but even she's not worth it because she's just window dressing. Bring back the days of Rose and Martha any day now.

I've only seen a couple of episodes, so I'm withdrawing judgement until the library has the full season available on DVD (which won't be for awhile). I liked Amy Pond so far.

I loved Martha, but, honestly, Donna was one of the reasons why I'm less fond of David Tennant than Christopher Eccleston.

I actually went an IMDBed that cause I didn't think he eas old enough. Then realized I'm an idiot and you're mocking his face shape.

LOL No worries, it was a pretty oblique/obscure reference. But yes, he does have a silly shaped head.

I remember quite a few of those openings from watching them when they were current...
I've liked all of the new Doctors, even the newest.
But, I liked Donna too, so what can I say...

I'm not sure why I didn't warm that strongly to Matt Smith. I don't hate him, and I liked the two episodes, and I really liked the Doctor/Companion relationship created in the first episode.

But, honestly, I think I need to see the rest of the season before passing a final judgement.

I didn't want to like him but I ended up doing so. The season gave me every Who always does, plenty of episode emotional rollercoasters.
Wait till you see the Van Gogh episode, omg.

Eccleston was the one who got me interested in DW. As SO said at the time, "If you don't know anything about The Doctor, start with him. He's a bit dark, but plays it straight enough so you can understand the basic storyline." He was right. If I had started with Tennant, my brain would probably still be whipping around somewhere Out There.

I really liked Tennant, but his mania eventually turned me off more often than not. I like the balance Smith has; his Doctor has just the right touch in that it's there, but but doesn't detract from the story.

As for companions: Love, love, love Donna. Wasn't a Rose fan -- I think Billie Piper did a fine job playing her, but the whole love interest thing skeeved me. Martha was OK. Amy's OK, but yeah, I can see her potentially becoming window dressing. I don't quite know how or why, but it's a gut feeling.

I couldn't stand Donna; she got on my nerves in her very first episode and it only seemed to get worse. Possibly because I'd really loved Martha - probably my favorite Companion to date, or just because something in Donna's personality rubbed me the wrong way. I liked Rose, but I thought Tennant had more chemistry with Martha, and Rose had more chemistry with Eccleston (I realize many, many people disagree with me on this last one.)

I liked Amy in the only two episodes that I've seen her in, although I don't think she was given much to do in the second one.

It manages to shout classic, freaky and new all at the same time. Well done.
