The New York Times has in its wisdom announced that I have read all it will allow me to read for the month. However, if I were to guess, I'd suspect that the same thing happens at Comic-Con that I saw happen at Dragon-Con (and did): people look at the lines, say, are you kidding me? and meander off to smaller events that might still have lines but which you have a reasonable chance of getting into. (That said, the last DragonCon I went to my friend and I went to six separate things Saturday night before we were able to get into anything, one reason I haven't gone back to DragonCon.) So I wouldn't be at all surprised to see some small events doing well just because a number of people decide that waiting in tents for movie trailers isn't worth it :)
I've been to SDCC three times. The only way I'll ever go back is if someone else handles the arrangements, because it's gotten so large as to be ridiculous. Forget about hotels selling out... TICKETS sell out in a matter of minutes.
And apparently it's no longer sufficient to wait in line for a few hours for the larger panels... it's now an overnight stay.
This is the same reason I'm doing WorldCon instead of DragonCon this year. DragonCon would almost certainly be more fun in many ways, and it's closer and would be significantly cheaper for me, but while WorldCon will have people, it won't have the ridiculous number of people that DragonCon had last time, and I shouldn't have to go to six different things Saturday before finding something that I can get into :)
(Course I say this having never been to a WorldCon, but attendance records seem to back me up here.)
I'm glad you live in an area where there's a rational explanation for clowns on motorcycles. Otherwise, I'd be freaked the hell out by the scenario you describe. *shudder* Can't sleep, clown will eat me...

I'm getting too old for that.

They usually have Evil Clowns running around then. But in the parks. July, on a main road in Windermere is just a touch more unusual.
