Game of Thrones, Season 3, Episode 4

Apr 23, 2013 00:50

This episode will probably be on my Hugo nomination ballot next year. So, with that as an introduction, THE CARPING! (Because it's me.)

Cut for major spoilers about the episode, minor spoilers about A Dance With Dragons. Hey, I wasn't the showrunner who decided to pull that plot into this season. )

She would not make a good Queen. She constantly makes bad decisions about taking care of her people. Her intentions may be great, in general, but she does NOT know what she's doing.

We see that in the books, sure. In fact that's a minor theme of her plot in the second and third books and a huge theme in the fifth book--she has no idea what she's doing. In the show ( ... )

To be fair, I'm not watching the show. I tried for a bit but could not get into it at all, though Tig loves it. So, if she's not being an idiot on the show, that's good.

I figure it'll end with Tyrion on the throne anyway.

Or maybe Pod...

Tyrion was definitely foreshadowed in the first book and is now in position to ride a dragon, maybe, so I can see that happening.

That's probably one reason why so many people were disappointed with ADWD. They wanted to see Dany most righteously triumph, rather than spin her wheels futilely in a plague-ridden city of backstabbing politicians.

Pass the honeyed locusts, baby.

My WAG for Ros' endgame? I think she'll take Jeyne Poole's place in the books.

Speaking for myself, it isn't so much that I wanted to see Dany righteously triumph as, I wanted to see her exhibit any of the good qualities for which I had once enjoyed her chapters.

Quoting Mari:

Martin is working against this, writing the story where the exiled king/queen returns and everyone mostly says, yeah, so what?

So far he's writing the story where the exiled queen never actually gets around to returning. :-P

All too true.

I'm wondering how that will play out on HBO -- people who haven't read the books seem to be assuming that Dany's going to march on Westeros now that she has flying dragons and an army. Which is an understandable assumption.

She should have marched on Westeros with her dragons and her army. As near as I can tell, the only reason not to is that the dragons aren't yet fully grown -- but god almighty, Martin should at least have sent her in that direction. Meereen was such a bloody mistake.

I find myself hoping that HBO will rewrite a number of things in this season and the upcoming ones. Not that I expect them to skip Meereen entirely (I think she'll go there next season), but they could make it less of a sucking pit of uselessness. And I have my fingers crossed so hard for them to rewrite what happens with Shae. Not to leave her alive -- she's pretty much got to die -- but not to pull the stupid bullshit "by the way, she's banging Tywin, and now let's watch Tyrion strangle her" twist of the books. It isn't often that I root for a female character to be refrigeratored, but in this case, Tywin killing her would actually be the preferable outcome.
