Saturday doings
The Boy and I went to see Black Widow yesterday. It was the first movie we saw in a theater since before the pandemic, so I probably would've enjoyed the experience even if the movie had sucked, but fortunately it didn't. Not the best of the Marvel movies, maybe, but definitely above average. The big revelation was Yelena Belova, whom I never really warmed up to in the comics, but who got to be awesome here. I was very relieved that they didn't make her evil or sexually exploited, both of which were a strong possibility given the comics. Instead she got to be Natasha's bratty but loving kid sister who also kicked a lot of ass. Florence Pugh was great, and looked gorgeous. (Her awesomeness does not mitigate my outrage at the way Natasha was ultimately treated in the MCU, but I could still appreciate it in its own right). The dysfunctional family dynamic between Natasha, Yelena, Alexei and Melina was great fun. I liked the focus on family, and on all the emotional bonds Natasha managed to forge for herself despite a life that really wasn't conducive to forging emotional bonds. I also liked that the ultimate mission was all about freeing the other Widows. The action climax was too long and thoroughly ridiculous, but I'm used to that in Marvel movies. And I will gladly watch any future movies or shows with Yelena, even the Hawkeye series which I previously had no real interest in.. Also, the AMC theater in La Jolla got all renovated since we last went there, and replaced the old crappy seats with huge plush recliners, with nice footrests and everything. Very comfy. It doesn't totally make up for the Arclight closing, but it's still nice.
After the movie, we got takeout from a Korean fried chicken place near the theater that we haven't tried before, and it was seriously some of the best fried chicken I've ever had. So crispy and spicy, yum! And later I deployed my ice cream maker for the second weekend in a row and made banana daiquiri sorbet and it came out amazing. So a pretty good Saturday overall.
