No you ain't got a thing if you ain't got that swing

I like to listen to music when I run, so I was very pleased when Apple finally released the iPhone upgrade that allowed multitasking, which meant I could listen to Pandora and still run my Runmeter app at the same time. Most of the time, I listen to 80s music, because that's the music I grew up with, and also because most of it is nice and bouncy ( Read more... )

So you're running backwards and in high heels?

I am impressed.

That would be pretty impressive, since normally I have trouble just walking forwards in high heels.

I'd never really gotten into swing music until a friend sent me a whole bunch of Glen Miller and I put it on instead of my usual B-52's housecleaning music. I'm downright dangerous with a vacuum cleaner and a big band beat.

In the past, I've only liked any sort of jazz when I was in an actual jazz club. But I'm really getting into it now.

helgabee loves the WFUV Sunday night show called The Big Broadcast, so you and she are going to have some music to talk about.
I can really see you in a long beaded gown, with an ostrich-feather boa.

I could probably manage the gown for a dinner party or something. I wouldn't want to try to dance in one, though. :-P

The only drawback, if you can call it that, is that I keep feeling that instead of running or walking, I should be DANCING! \O/

I TOTALLY know this problem! I adore swing dancing more than anything, so I often actually do start dancing instead of walking. One memorable time, I even spent an entire subway ride in New York dancing with one of the standing poles and my iPod (it was my birthday, and I'd just left the Frim Fram Jam to meet my friends at a bar; I was in a GREAT mood).

Have you ever been swing dancing? I bet you could find a place near you fairly easily; college towns tend to have a pretty good scene. And it's REALLY FUN. You can call it fic research! ;)

I just had to upload this version of the song in your subject line, because it's my absolute favorite, and because Ella Fitzgerald is completely awesome. If you'd like some more swing/1940s music, I have, um...lots. And I'm happy to share!

Swing dancing is one of those things I occasionally have wistful thoughts about but have never actually done. I'm a terrible dancer, totally uncoordinated, and with no rhythm at all. It least when I run, it doesn't matter if I look pretty.
