Reflections on Coming Home to Singapore

I am fortunate, this much I know. I grew up in a city that was making its way in the world and then I moved away to a city voted one of the world's most livable cities. I've had many lovely experiences and now I've come 'home' again and today my birthplace is celebrating her 46th year of nationhood ( Read more... )

i agree w ur mention of "Distrust of migrants". For the life of me I can't understand why there are such violent reactions to this. We haven't even moved from tolerance to acceptance amongst our own four races within Singapore. Add to that other nationalities it seems to have brought out the worst in us. I think alot of us forget that our forefathers were also migrants. No one is perfect but I cannot and will not understand the discrimination of an individual based on their nationality, race or religion. The curry incident is being blown way out of proportion and someone needs to smack 'em on the head. I don't think that just coz we were born here gives us the right to be an ass!

Indeed. And for many of us, we are only but 3rd or 4th generation Singaporeans. But I guess when the nation tries so darn hard to believe that its founding is only 46 years ago, other things get 'forgotten' too.

Blatant dislike for certain groups of migrants only...I find that Singaporeans often have no issues with angmoh expats ;) It's not purely a class thing too, as many Chinese immigrants have professional jobs...

That's true. I conviently forgot about that. I think it's a post-colonial mentality that whites are somehow superior.

Hi hiiiiii,

I've not been to the Marina side of singapore. One dayyyy .... I shall get there :)

Same here in Perth, the poverty line is on the increase. The mining industry is booming but most ppl don't benefit from it. -jp-

one day you shall come visit me!
I think it's more obvious on the streets in the city. I had not previously see so many homeless people. =(
